Mint Leaf – tasty fine dining Indian food in West End

On a recent Sunday night when we felt like eating Indian food, we tried Mint Leaf Restaurant & Bar near Haymarket.  We loved the food and drinks at Mint Leaf and may go back there with a group of friends.   Mint Leaf has a large lounge and a dining area.  The restaurant felt more like a club ideal for groups than for a couple, although on a Sunday night it felt more like an exclusive date night spot.  Chef Rajinder Pandey who was part of the restaurant’s opening team in 2003 is now back at Mint Leaf.  The latest A la Carte menu by Chef Pandey indicates innovative appetizers, side dishes,  and desserts, and standard main courses.   As with many Indian restaurants, there are a lot of vegetarian items on the menu and they are labeled appropriately as well.

We got the spicy vodka martini and the caipirinha. The vodka martini was sweet and spicy with neither flavor dominating the drink – I would get this again.  The caipirinha was a standard well made caipirinha.

The bhel puri arrived in a papad cone with the sweet and tangy tamarind-date chutney drizzled across. The plating of the bhel puri was non-traditional,  It tasted fine too even though it did not include boiled and dry mashed potatoes.

We got the tikka platter where we could get a sampling of chicken, duck, guinea fowl and lamb kebabs.  We got exactly 4 pieces – i.e., one of each kind of tikka. All the tikka pieces were excellent – well spiced, but not too hot, tender in texture – and made us want to order more of the same.

We got a pudina paratha – a traditional flat bread sprinkled with dried spearmint.  We were intrigued by the chili cheese broccoli floret dish on the menu.  The broccoli florets were very spicy despite the cheese and were grilled al dente. I recommend getting these with some raita as we did.

I had to get the blue berry kulfi just to try the kulfi.  It was well presented.  The best part of this dessert was the super-fresh blue berry confit.  I have had better kulfi in India for sure and in Sunnyvale, California – see this post on Nirvanaah

I would go back to Mint Leaf again, with a group of friends or for the pre and post-theater menus.
