El Camion offers late night Mexican in Soho, London

El Camion is a small(ish) Mexican dining spot in Soho, London that serves food from the Baja Peninsula and North West Mexico.  El Camion’s decor with its bright floral table cloth, bright lighting, and displays of a range of hot sauces and alcohol feels very much like a Mexican restaurant in NYC (like Hecho en Dumbo in NYC – blog post due soon).   El Camion seemed popular with small and large groups (after work, pre- and post-clubbers), couples and a few lone diners as well.

The food at El Camion tasted very authentic to me – I am aware that not everyone thinks so (The Picky Glutton differs in his opinion about El Camion in his post where he rates a number of Mexican restaurants in London).  I wish I could try every Mexican restaurant on his list, and I may get to just a few in the next several months.  Back to El Camion.   We were looking for a late night restaurant in Soho (I suppose, many people are as well), and El Camion came to our rescue. El Camion’s late night menu is a shorter version of its regular menu with fewer vegetarian items.  The only dish I wish they had included in their late night menu is “churros“.  Who would not want to eat “churros” late night?  I don’t get it.

El Camion has a cocktail bar, Pink Chihuahua, right next door to it.   One needs membership to enter Pink Chihuahua, but we were told that we could head there after dinner – not sure what made us special, or if there was a special waiver for everyone that night.  Well, we will never know.

Now about the food and drinks at El Camion.  The restaurant has a few Mexican beers and my favorite Mexican beer cocktail – a Michelada.  I just had to get it and loved it.  We got the guacamole, chicken tinga tacos, Picadillo beef tacos, and the daily selection of ice creams.

The guacamole was just right – not too spicy, and not too mild.  Wish the guacamole came with soft corn tortillas – can’t remember if we did not ask for them.

The tacos appeared relatively small, but delicious.  We could ordered some sides to accompany the tacos (black beans, Mexican rice, or a side salad), but we chose not to get any side.

The ice creams we tried were dark chocolate (excellent), candied ginger (too sweet), and another flavour that I cannot remember.

We liked the food at El Camion enough to want to go back there to try out their regular menu, including their specials.
